As an extremely private person, I need a lot of personal space. Exposed or open working areas prove to be daunting to me. Hence, it became the motivating force to find out the issues pertaining to the gaze facilitated by architectural transparency. The term transparency is positive, affirmative. Clearly defined in the dictionary as ''clear,'' ''without guile or concealment.'', there seems no doubt about being transparent. The modernists have regarded it as an ethical triumph, a utopian universal virtue, embodying values such as truth, honesty and accountability. Even up till today, this symbolism is still reiterated in Reichstag, Berlin’s transparent cupola in 1999. However, I would like to put across that transparency in contemporary architecture is no longer one that symbolizes the truth and honesty but takes on a more complex, diverse meaning of public and private, scrutiny, voyeurism and surveillance. The use of glass as an architectural material is not dissimilar to Jeremy Bentham’s idea of panopticon. Of which, Michel Foucault did a detailed analysis of and theorized the society of surveillance. The invisible eye purportedly helps keep people vigilant and on their toes, for they constantly believe that they are being watched. As such, what is being presented can be distorted or glazed over, especially when the gaze is noticed. The formal aesthetics of lines, curves and angles inherent in human forms fascinates her greatly ever since she took up life drawing during her school days and it continues to be one of her favourite subject matter. Given the close association of flowers with femininity, the flora setting which the women are set in seems only natural. Foucault draws a parallel of such scrutiny to that of a physician’s gaze in his book Birth of the Clinic, which I made reference to in many series of my artwork. The people of modernity thought that with this powerful gaze the physician could penetrate illusion and see through to the underlying reality, that the physician had the power to see the hidden truth. She often draws inspiration from her surroundings and her recent interest lies in plant life and people. The formal aesthetics of lines, curves and angles inherent in human forms fascinates her greatly ever since she took up life drawing during her school days and it continues to be one of her favourite subject matter. Given the close association of flowers with femininity, the flora setting which the women are set in seems only natural. How do I perceive space in today’s context? How do I represent space in contemporary art sense? How does it challenge or differ from traditional notions of space? Space, conventionally, has been defined as “a limited extent in one, two, or three dimensions : distance, area, volume” or “a set of mathematical elements and especially of abstractions of all the points on a line, in a plane, or in physical space. Naturally, the depiction of space had been just as straightforward as its definition. The Renaissance perspective, for an extensive period of time in art history, was the only mode of representation of space (at least in Western Art). With which, it could create a highly illusionistic, real-like rendering of a space. Space was absolute and definite. But space is that and much more. The idea of space as a material figure, defined by physical boundaries was no longer adequate. “Around 1910 a certain space was shattered. It was the space of common sense, of knowledge, of social practice, of political power… the space, too, of classical perspective and geometry… bodied forth in Western art and Philosophy, as in the form of the city and town.” - Henri Lefebvre In modern and contemporary theoretical frameworks, space has been related to other entities such as time, memories, experience etc. It is much more complex, imbued with a myriad of meanings. Hence, it became the motivating force to find out the issues pertaining to the gaze facilitated by architectural transparency. The term transparency is positive, affirmative. Clearly defined in the dictionary as ''clear,'' ''without guile or concealment.'', there seems no doubt about being transparent. The modernists have regarded it as an ethical triumph, a utopian universal virtue, embodying values such as truth, honesty and accountability. Even up till today, this symbolism is still reiterated in Reichstag, Berlin’s transparent cupola in 1999. However, I would like to put across that transparency in contemporary architecture is no longer one that symbolizes the truth and honesty but takes on a more complex, diverse meaning of public and private, voyeurism, surveillance and scrutiny. Foucault draws a parallel of such scrutiny to that of a physician’s gaze in his book Birth of the Clinic, which I made reference to in many series of my artwork. The people of modernity thought that with this powerful gaze the physician could penetrate illusion and see through to the underlying reality, that the physician had the power to see the hidden truth. The use of glass as an architectural material is not dissimilar to Jeremy Bentham’s idea of panopticon. Of which, Michel Foucault did a detailed analysis of and theorized the society of surveillance. The invisible eye purportedly helps keep people vigilant and on their toes, for they constantly believe that they are being watched. As such, what is being presented can be distorted or glazed over, especially when the gaze is noticed. Amongst all explanations, I am most fascinated by psychoanalysis of dreams whereby it is linked to repressed emotions and drives. “Dreams interpretation is the royal path to (discovery of the) unconscious” - Sigmund Freud A Dream a Day is a series of drawings dream inspired. How do I perceive space in today’s context? How do I represent space in contemporary art sense? How does it challenge or differ from traditional notions of space? Space, conventionally, has been defined as “a limited extent in one, two, or three dimensions : distance, area, volume” or “a set of mathematical elements and especially of abstractions of all the points on a line, in a plane, or in physical space. Naturally, the depiction of space had been just as straightforward as its definition. The Renaissance perspective, for an extensive period of time in art history, was the only mode of representation of space (at least in Western Art). With which, it could create a highly illusionistic, real-like rendering of a space. Space was absolute and definite. But space is that and much more. The idea of space as a material figure, defined by physical boundaries was no longer adequate. “Around 1910 a certain space was shattered. It was the space of common sense, of knowledge, of social practice, of political power… the space, too, of classical perspective and geometry… bodied forth in Western art and Philosophy, as in the form of the city and town.” - Henri Lefebvre In modern and contemporary theoretical frameworks, space has been related to other entities such as time, memories, experience etc. It is much more complex, imbued with a myriad of meanings.
